Painting 14 Fence Panels and a Shed

We recently painted 14 fence panels and a shed for one of our clients. The chosen hue? A stunning medium oak that promised to breathe new life into the space.

First off, let’s talk prep work because, as we always say, a stellar outcome begins with meticulous preparation. We rolled up our sleeves to ensure each fence panel and the shed were cleaned and prepped, setting the stage for a transformation that would have the neighbours doing a double-take.

Ah, but then there’s the English weather – always a gamble, isn’t it? Aiming for that rare window of clear, dry, sunny weather felt a bit like waiting for a unicorn to prance by! Eventually, we decided to embrace the adventurous spirit of true British gardeners and tackled the project head-on, dodging those quintessentially English showers. It added a dash of excitement to the task and, let’s be honest, a bit of speed to our strokes!

Now, onto the nitty-gritty of painting. Our experience tells us that two coats are usually the way to go, especially if the wood hasn’t seen a paintbrush in a while or if the elements have been particularly unkind. However, every project is as unique as the garden it beautifies, and this time, our client was pleased with the idea of a single coat. That said, we’re advocates for going the extra mile (or coat) to ensure lasting beauty and protection, particularly for those projects that feel like a refresh is long overdue.

We armed ourselves with approximately 20 litres of paint, aiming for coverage as rich and even as the soil in spring. Achieving such coverage typically sets the stage for a potential second coat to be unnecessary, though we stand ready to reassess once the first coat dries to perfection.

For our fellow garden lovers eyeing their fences and sheds, contemplating a colour refresh, here are a couple of friendly tips from your Dandscaping buddies:

  1. Weather Watch: Choose your days wisely. A dry forecast is ideal, but if you decide to brave the elements, make sure your paint is quick-drying and be ready to cover your work if a surprise shower descends.

  2. Prep is Key: A clean surface ensures your paint adheres better and lasts longer. A bit of elbow grease goes a long way in painting projects.

  3. Quality Counts: Opt for high-quality outdoor paint. It might seem like a splurge, but its resistance to weather and wear makes it worth every penny.

  4. Cover Up: Not just the fence! Make sure to protect your plants and surfaces from drips and spills. After all, paint splatters are not the kind of ‘spots’ we like on our greenery.

We’re thrilled with how this project is shaping up and can’t wait to share the final reveal. Whether you’re tackling a similar endeavour or dreaming up your next garden transformation, remember, we’re here to help.
